What is BMI?
BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a simple calculation that uses your height and weight to estimate your body fat. It's a widely used screening tool to identify potential weight problems for adults. It gives you a general idea of whether you're in a healthy weight range for your height.
How to Interpret Your BMI Score
This calculator categorizes your BMI into one of the standard weight status categories:
- Underweight (below 18.5): This may indicate that you're not eating enough or could be a sign of illness.
- Normal (18.5 - 24.9): You are in a healthy weight range for your height. This range is associated with the lowest risk of weight-related health issues.
- Overweight (25.0 - 29.9): Your weight may be putting you at increased risk for health problems like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
- Obese (30.0 and above): This indicates a significantly higher risk of serious weight-related health conditions.
Important Considerations
While BMI is a useful indicator for the average person, it's not a perfect measurement. It doesn't distinguish between fat and muscle mass. For example, a very muscular athlete might have a high BMI but very low body fat. It also doesn't account for age, sex, or ethnicity.
